Before the making of Arda, the evil Vala Melkor corrupted lesser Maiar (angelic beings) to his service, which then became known as Balrogs. They are fierce demons armed with multi-pronged fiery whips and swords made of flame, with claws like steel. Morgoth used them to torture his captives, as the Balrogs were loyal to him.

Balrogs are very large, winged monsters that resemble lava covered with a dark crust. They are on fire, and have a deafening roar.
